Writing centers are institutional initiatives that foster the strengthening of academic literacy. To this end, universities in Latin America have set out alternative strategies to their traditional courses over the past several years. At the same time, writing centers have started to be acknowledged at the internal, local, and regional levels. This webinar will present a description of the writing centers in Latin America, of their importance in the universities, and of the players in the development of these centers. Tendencies and current conceptions, the main operational strategies, and the writing centers' adaptations to the current scenario will also be discussed.

Dr. Violeta Molina-Natera holds a PhD in Education, a Master’s degree in Linguistics and Spanish, and she is a speech therapist. Currently, she is the director of the Department of Communication and Language at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana at Cali, Colombia. Aimed at graduate students, this webinar will present strategies for the identification of disciplinary writing conventions in different areas of study, and how to use them to write a clearer and more publishable manuscript. By focusing on textual elements and patterns present in published articles, the instructor will guide participants towards understanding writing conventions, identifying them in the reference articles, and using them to improve their own writing. For this webinar, participants should bring two (2) scientific articles which are considered seminal in their research area.
